CSR in Health and Safety
An award winning initiative
The health and safety of our employees, sub-contractors and all those that we come into contact with is of paramount importance.
Our ACTIVE (Aware Compliant Trained Informed Vigilant Effective) campaign was launched in 2008 and aims to promote safe practices at work, improve performance and protect communities, and encourages staff to take personal responsibility for their own health and safety, and comply with legislation and Company policy. We see this as a steering vehicle to change the Health and Safety culture within our organisation on a permanent basis. The objective at launch was to halve the number of safety related incidents and raise the Company into the top quartile for health and safety performance by 2012.
ACTIVE operates on many levels and applies to all United House operations. For example, directors and senior managers play a part in the campaign by conducting safety tours. We publish regular in-house health and safety bulletins and newsletters. Staff and sub-contractors undergo the relevant training for their jobs, and from March 2010 it has been compulsory for all site staff to hold CSCS cards (Construction Skills Certification Scheme). To assess its effectiveness, the scheme is independently audited and has been praised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
We are pleased to say that we already have achieved a reduction in reportable accidents, with results improving year on year. Ahead of its original objective, United House achieved top quartile position in the 2009 Constructing Excellence Accident Incidence Rate table.
United House runs health and safety presentations for schools, sub-contractors and clients, all of our sites are signed up to the Considerate Constructors Scheme, and we are members of the British Safety Council.
Awards related to health and safety include winning the coveted Construction Industry Awards 'Silver Helmet' in 2009 and British Safety Council awards for fourteen consecutive years.
