Health and Safety

Taking the initiative with our ACTIVE approach

United House is committed to the preservation and enhancement of Health and Safety as an integral part of the organisation. We strive at all times to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and other requirements, taking active measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for staff, sub-contractors, clients, residents and the communities in which we work.

In 2008, we initiated our award-winning Health and Safety campaign ACTIVE (Aware Compliant Trained Informed Vigilant Effective) to raise awareness with staff and sub-contractors, with an overarching aim of halving the current number of Health and Safety related incidents by 2012. As a result, performance has improved year on year and we have achieved top quartile position in the Constructing Excellence Accident Incidence Rate table. Our endeavours and the ACTIVE campaign won us the coveted Construction Industry Awards ‘Silver Helmet’ for Health and Safety in 2009.

Other notable achievements include compulsory CSCS cards for all site staff, and registration of all our sites with the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

The Group’s Health & Safety Objectives are to:

  • Halve the total number of health and safety related incidents by 2012
  • Continually improve health and safety performance and raise the company into the construction industry top quartile
  • Raise the company’s profile in the market through the achievement of industry health & safety awards.

The United House Limited Health & Safety Management System, and the company and project activities and records associated with it, have been certificated as compliant with BS OHSAS 18001:2007.
