an early Christmas gift from united house to Mole Valley residents

Residents of Mole Valley Housing Association's sheltered housing and elderly care scheme at Douglas House in Edenside Road, Great Bookham enjoy Christmas lunch in their new communal kitchen - a gift from leading social housing contractor and developer, United House.

The kitchen project came about following United House's work on a wider scheme refurbishing properties across Mole Valley to meet Decent Homes Standards. Having noted that the communal kitchen at Douglas House needed updating, United House fitted a brand new kitchen and created more space free of charge.

United House is currently carrying out a £20 million worth of improvements to 1500 properties on behalf of Mole Valley Housing Association. The specialist housing and construction company is refurbishing properties across Mole Valley in Surrey including kitchen, bathroom, window and front door replacement, central heating installation and rewiring to ensure all homes meet the Decent Homes Standard.

Simon Farmer, Head of Property Services at Mole Valley Housing Association said, 'The new kitchen at Douglas House is just the start of a scheme that will improve the quality of life for so many people across Mole Valley. We are delighted to see the residents of Douglas House toast Christmas 2008 in the comforts of their new kitchen and thank United House for their efforts.'

Lyn Isted, Community Development Manager for United House, said, 'We understand how important it is for the residents to socialise with each other so we are delighted to provide this kitchen. The new kitchen will allow the residents to continue to benefit from their weekly Lunch Club and catch up on all the gossip!'

The improvements form part of the first major improvement programme for Mole Valley Housing Association, which owns 3500 properties in the area.

Another cooking-related activity that will benefit from the new kitchen is a Healthy Eating and cooking class held by Mole Valley Housing Association in conjunction with Age Concern at both Douglas House and Lime Tree Court, Ashtead. The classes have been well attended, with 25 people attending regularly and have consisted of eight sessions of 1-1.5 hours. The tutor and demonstrator Jen Twydell, a former competitor on TV's Masterchef, has been showing the residents how to cook simple health food on a low budget.
